A Prediction Market User Profited $436,000 from Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Market Movement in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
One account, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions right before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Industry Context
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
