Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
