The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
