Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
